Emotional Freedom Technique(EFT) & Post Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD)

A randomized controlled trial from 2013 examined the effect of Emotional Freedom Techniques on psychological distress symptoms in veterans with post traumatic stress disorder.

Veterans meeting the clinical criteria for PTSD were randomized to EFT or standard of care wait list.

The EFT intervention consisted of 6-hour-long EFT coaching sessions concurrent with standard care.

Emotional Freedom Techniques or the tapping solution as its commonly known, is a form of psychological acupressure that uses finger tapping techniques on various body points.

The standard of care wait list and EFT groups were compared before and after the intervention. The EFT subjects had significantly reduced psychological distress and PTSD symptom levels after the test.

In addition, 90 percent of the EFT group no longer met PTSD clinical criteria, compared with 4 percent in the standard of care wait list group.

The results are consistent with that of other published reports showing emotional freedom techniques efficiency in treating PTSD and co morbid symptoms and its long-term effects.
