Francine Anne Umaru, also known as Sistah Fran, was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Englewood, New Jersey and is proud of her Jamaican heritage. With the aspiration to become a licensed clinical social worker, she recently pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Relations at Trinity Washington University.
Sistah Fran is a survivor of childhood sexual, physical, and verbal (emotional) abuse. Unfortunately, the perpetrator was her biological father and her mother was complicit, did absolutely nothing to protect her, and is still married to him. The unresolved trauma manifested into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Her passion for poetry has continued into adulthood and in July 2017, she published her first book of 30 poems, Break the Silence & Bloom: My Poetic Testimonies. With this book, she hopes to inspire victims and survivors of childhood abuse.
As the founder of Break the Silence and Bloom, she carries out her mission to facilitate and normalize conversations around child abuse and neglect; to encourage adult survivors to speak their truth in safe spaces; and to promote healing so they can bloom. She also serves as a child abuse prevention advocate and a Darkness to Light Stewards of Children® Authorized Facilitator in the D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia (DMV) community.
